Manor Moments

March is National Professional Social Workers Month

March 2025

What is a social worker?

A social worker uses empathy, patience, active listening, and problem solving to help older adults navigate obstacles so they can live as fully and independently as possible. They tend to be perceptive, respectful, critical thinkers with effective interpersonal communication skills. Attentive at organizing information and resources, social workers serve as dependable “navigators” through the complicated healthcare and social service systems. They advocate for residents and act as liaisons, serving as the bridge of communication between residents and the rest of the care team and ensuring residents receive the services they need.

Who is our Campus Social Services Coordinator at Cornwall Manor and how can she help us?

Wendy Ebersole has been a social worker at Cornwall Manor for almost 19 years and has worked as a team member in the Health Center, in Corson Hall, and on campus.  She has 24 years of experience working with older adults and their families. As the Campus Social Services Coordinator in Independent Living, Wendy is here to provide general support and assistance to campus residents. Wendy can assist with:

  • Orientation and adjustment to campus living
  • End-of-life planning
  • Transitions to next levels of care
  • Grief and loss support
  • Maintaining autonomy by linking resources for in-home care
  • Questions related to prescription or insurance coverage
  • Managing challenges related to health through education and intervention
  • Conflict resolution with other residents, family members or staff persons
  • Conversation and emotional support
  • Day-to-day concerns

When asked what she likes most about her role as Campus Social Service Coordinator, Wendy states, “Cornwall Manor feels like home. Many know I left for a short time to try something new, but I was thrilled to return. No profession will ever be more satisfying than one in which you have the opportunity to form strong connections and meaningful relationships with older adults and their families and to witness the positive impact your work makes on their lives. Empathy is at the very heart of social work, and I feel it is my greatest strength. I truly enjoy using it.”

Wendy’s office is located on the second floor of the Freeman Community Center. She can be reached by calling 717-675-1531 or emailing webersole@cornwallmanor.org
