This Valentine’s Day, we celebrate a love story that has stood the test of time. Cornwall Manor residents Robert (Bob) and Jean Stokes are set to mark their 70th wedding anniversary in June 2025. At almost 94 and 93 years old, respectively, Bob and Jean attribute their enduring love to a simple philosophy: “don’t sweat the small stuff.”

Their journey together began over 75 years ago when they met through a mutual friend while attending college in South Carolina. Jean, from Allentown, PA, was studying elementary education, and Bob, a native of Shamokin, PA, was pursuing theology. Their first date was a Sunday church service, setting the tone for a relationship deeply rooted in faith.

After graduating college, Jean returned to Pennsylvania to teach, while Bob continued his education and served a church in Illinois. Despite the distance, their love flourished through letters and visits during the summer and at Christmas. After a year apart, Jean moved to Illinois to be with Bob. They were married in 1955 by Jean’s father, a Methodist minister.

Their early years together were humble, living in a home with a water pump and an outhouse. In 1956, they welcomed their first child, Anne, followed by Dan in 1958, Dick in 1961, Don in 1964, and Beth in 1971. Today, their family has grown to include six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Bob’s career as a United Methodist pastor served various churches and as district superintendent of the State College District of the Central Pennsylvania Conference during his 40 years of ministry. Jean balanced raising their children with substitute teaching. Camping became a cherished family activity, creating countless memories. Their faith and sense of humor have been their guiding lights, helping them navigate life’s challenges.

Cornwall Manor was a familiar place to both Bob and Jean. Jean’s Aunt and Uncle lived at Cornwall Manor and Bob visited the senior living community frequently when visiting members of the church who resided here. Jean recalls receiving a postcard in the mail, showcasing the house they live in today. They came to visit and knew it was home as soon as they walked through the door. It was the only accommodation they toured and in 2006, their house at the top of Treetop Circle became home.

Soon after settling, they quickly became active members of the community and in 2016 received the Founders Day Award, which is presented to individuals ‘whose extraordinary commitment to Cornwall Manor has had a significant impact on the retirement community’s ministry.’ The Stokes were active in numerous volunteer efforts at Cornwall Manor, their church and the local community. They are members of both the Cornwall Manor Legacy Circle and Buckingham Society for their personal support of the retirement community’s ministry.

While leading busy lives, they always made time for one another and cherished their time together.  Whether it’s a spontaneous country drive or an overnight stay at a bed and breakfast, their secret to a long-lasting marriage is sharing everything, maintaining a sense of humor and making time for each other.

Their family remains close-knit, with weekly Zoom calls bringing together their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Bob and Jean are immensely proud of their family, all of whom have chosen careers dedicated to helping others.

As they prepare to celebrate their 70th anniversary, Bob and Jean’s love story serves as a beautiful reminder of the power of commitment, faith, and joy in the journey of life. Happy Valentine’s Day to a truly inspiring couple!
