Bringing Joy Through Music: A Volunteer Spotlight on Heather Buffington
Heather Buffington has spent a lifetime sharing the gift of music—and in retirement, she continues to bring harmony, joy and connection to those around her at Cornwall Manor and throughout the community.
A native of Lebanon County, Heather retired in 2021 after a remarkable 36-year career as an elementary school music teacher in the Northern Lebanon School District. A graduate of Lebanon Valley College, she dedicated her professional life to nurturing young musicians and instilling a love of music in her students. Her own musical journey began at just four years old, when her mother, Pat Walter—a Cornwall Manor resident since 2005—started her on piano lessons. That early foundation blossomed into a lifelong passion.
Today, Heather remains deeply involved in music, generously volunteering her talents at Cornwall Manor. She serves as accompanist for the Manor Men and the Zerr Chapel Choir and supports special programs, including the Memorial and Veterans Day services. These opportunities allow her to continue doing what she loves most—bringing people together through music. One of the most meaningful aspects of her volunteer work is the chance to share music with her mother. Years ago, after Pat retired, she volunteered at Heather’s school and accompanied the chorus. Now, the roles have come full circle, with Heather accompanying for her mother—a special connection that both cherish. Heather makes it a priority to visit her mother each week and their shared love of music remains a treasured bond.
Beyond Cornwall Manor, Heather’s schedule remains active and full. She serves as President of the Harmonia Music Association and Vice President of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional society for women educators. Known fondly by her grandson as the “meeting master,” Heather embraces opportunities to lead, organize and stay engaged in the community she values.
Faith is another important cornerstone of Heather’s life. At her church, Holy Trinity Lutheran, she directs two bell choirs, sings in the choir, organizes the annual mission trip, and participates in WELCA (Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America). Her faith community supports her ongoing spiritual journey and commitment to service, both locally and beyond.
Heather is also a devoted family member. She is a widow and the proud mother of two sons and grandmother to one grandson. Music continues to run strong throughout her family, as all of her relatives are involved in music in some way. In her free time, she enjoys reading light fiction—recently finishing At First Sight by Nicholas Sparks—playing board games, and spending quality time with her loved ones. She shares her home with Rusty, her cheerful Beagle-Terrier mix, who provides companionship and joy.
Heather appreciates the welcoming and kind atmosphere at Cornwall Manor and values being part of its vibrant musical life. For her, volunteering is a natural extension of who she is. She simply loves sharing her musical abilities to uplift others, create meaningful experiences and spread joy.
With a life rooted in music, service and family, Heather Buffington continues to make a lasting impact—bringing warmth and inspiration to all who have the pleasure of hearing her play.
